Bogotá sits at about 2,600 metres in the Andes, which shapes both the climate and how you should plan your first day. It is Colombia's main international gateway, so many itineraries pass through it — though the city itself justifies more than a connection.
When to visit
December to March and July to August are the drier windows. Temperatures are stable year-round; it is the rainfall that changes.
Getting around
The TransMilenio bus system covers the main corridors. Ride-hailing is common for anything off those routes.
Good to know
- The altitude is higher than Mexico City's — take the first day slowly.
- It is cool year-round despite being near the equator; pack layers, not shorts.
- Bogotá connects onward to Cartagena, Medellín and the coffee region by short domestic flights.
